WordPress is an open-source content management system that can be used to build websites and online stores. It was founded in 2005 by Matt Mullenweg and has enjoyed a growing community ever since. This community meets regularly at so-called WordCamps, which take place in the USA, Asia, and Europe.
After WordCamp Europe (WCEU) took place online for the last two years (2020 and 2021), it was a great pleasure to meet again in the usual personal way this year. This time, the venue was Porto (Portugal), and over 2,000 participants attended the event from June 2 to 4, 2022.
Core Elements WCEU
WordCamp Europe takes place regularly, giving the WordPress community the opportunity to learn and discuss the latest developments and trends. At WCEU in Porto, various stages and event rooms were available for speeches, lectures and workshops.

On the so-called Contributor Day, participants contribute their knowledge. Various working groups are formed for this purpose, each of which focuses on a specific topic. For example, technical problems are solved, existing plugins or programs are further developed.
This way WordPress is further developed with the support of the community and remains modern, up-to-date, and innovative.

WordCamp Europe mainly consists of speeches and presentations. This year, for example, the following topics were presented:
- The real impact of having website performance as a mindset
- Growing in WordPress through partnerships
- Creating a paid newsletter subscription in WordPress
- Level up block building skills

Another important part of the event are the workshops. Participants can register for these and then have the opportunity to ask questions about the respective topics directly. Interesting workshops were for example:
- WP_Query: the power of flexibility
- Using WordPress as an API
- Creating a pre-publish checklist for Gutenberg

WP Cool Tools Involved
As enthusiastic WordPress developers and users, we at WP Cool Tools also actively supported WordCamp Europe in Porto.

As an organizer, Sandro used his commercial expertise to monitor and approve all financial matters in the budget team and pay outstanding invoices months before the event. The aim was to manage the sponsorship funds and ticket sales revenue in such a way that all costs were covered. This goal was achieved brilliantly.
Anita took on various tasks as a volunteer during the event. Since she loves working with people, she was assigned to areas where good communication was essential.
WordCamp Europe 2023
It was three intense, energetic days of WordPress. Everyone agreed that an online WordCamp can never convey the energy, joy, and enthusiasm of a face-to-face meeting.
And so WordCamp Europe 2023 will once again take place in a wonderful location. It’s heading to Athens (Greece)! We are very much looking forward to the event and will once again be actively supporting it.
